Tackling your entire home at one time is not only stressful, but unrealistic. I prefer to do one room at a time and may spend a day at sorting, using the four box method: Box 1 to keep as usable now, Box 2 for the garbage bin, Box 3 for recycling and Box 4 for reconsideration; should I keep it? Or...
Let's start with the bathroom counter top:
A cluttered bathroom counter can make your morning routine feel chaotic and stressful. When every inch of your countertop is covered with bottles, brushes, and toiletries, it’s hard to find what you need quickly. Creating a clean, organized space not only improves the look of your bathroom but also helps you start your day with calm and clarity. This post shares practical, easy-to-follow tips to keep your bathroom counter neat and functional.

Start by Clearing Everything Off
Before organizing, remove all items from your bathroom counter. This step gives you a fresh perspective on what you actually use daily versus what just takes up space. Lay everything out on a clean surface and sort items into categories:
Daily essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, hand/face soap and moisturizer)
Occasional use (special creams, perfumes)
Expired or empty products
Items that belong elsewhere
Throw away expired or empty products immediately. This reduces clutter and prevents you from holding onto things you no longer need.
Use Containers and Trays to Group Items
Grouping similar items together helps keep your counter tidy and visually appealing. Use small containers, trays, or baskets to hold items like makeup, skincare, or hair accessories. This prevents products from spreading out and makes cleaning easier.
Choose containers that fit your counter size and style.
Clear acrylic trays work well for visibility, and resin containers hide items you don't want to see.
Use labeled containers if you share the bathroom with others.
For example, a small tray for your daily skincare routine keeps everything in one place and ready to grab.
Maximize Vertical Space with Shelves or Wall Organizers
If your counter space is limited, look up. Adding a small shelf or wall-mounted organizer above or beside the sink can free up valuable counter area. Use these to store items you don’t need every day but want close by.
Install a floating shelf for extra storage.
Use wall-mounted baskets or hooks for brushes and towels, and even a roll of toilet paper.
Magnetic strips can hold metal tools like tweezers or nail clippers.
Note: Check out Ikea or Walmart and Winners for bathroom accessories that suit your needs. You will be pleasantly surprised. I found some easy to maintain mix n match resin bathroom containers to hold my toothbrush, tootpaste, cotton swabs, and a jewellery or nic nac tray!
This approach keeps your essentials accessible without crowding the countertop.
Store Extras in Drawers or Cabinets
Keep only the items you use daily on the counter. Store backups and less frequently used products in drawers or cabinets. Use drawer dividers or small bins to keep these spaces organized.
Assign each drawer a category (hair care, oral care, makeup).
Use clear bins to see contents easily.
Label bins or drawers for quick access.
This method reduces countertop clutter and keeps your bathroom looking streamlined.
Limit Decorative Items
While a few decorative touches can make your bathroom feel inviting, too many decorations add to clutter, and dust or splatter. Choose one or two small items like a plant or a candle to keep the space fresh without overwhelming it.
Pick decorations that are easy to clean.
Avoid large or multiple items that take up counter space.
Rotate decorations seasonally to keep the look fresh.
A single small succulent or a stylish soap dispenser can add personality without clutter.
Keep Daily Essentials Visible but Neat
Items you use every day should be easy to reach but not scattered. Consider these ideas:
Use a toothbrush holder that keeps brushes upright and separated.
Store frequently used lotions or creams in a small tray.
Keep your soap in a dish that matches your bathroom style.
This keeps your routine smooth and your counter tidy.
Regularly Reassess and Declutter
Decluttering is not a one-time task. Make it a habit to review your bathroom counter every few weeks. Remove items that are no longer needed and reorganize as necessary.
Set a reminder to tidy up weekly.
Check expiration dates on products regularly.
Adjust storage solutions as your needs change.
This ongoing care keeps your bathroom counter clutter-free and clean long term.
Use Multi-Functional Storage Solutions
Look for storage options that serve more than one purpose. For example, a mirrored cabinet can provide storage and a place to check your appearance. A countertop organizer with compartments can hold brushes, makeup, and jewelry all in one. (I like this idea best. Makes me feel good)
Choose items that fit your bathroom’s size and style, use uniform and complimenting colours.
Multi-functional pieces reduce the number of items on the counter.
Consider portable organizers if you like to keep your routine flexible.
This helps you maintain a clean look without sacrificing convenience.
Keep Cleaning Supplies Handy
A clean counter looks less cluttered. Keep a small cleaning kit nearby to wipe down surfaces regularly.
Use disinfectant wipes or a soft cotton cloth.
Clean spills and splashes immediately.
Schedule a deeper clean weekly.
Regular dusting and cleaning prevents buildup and keeps your bathroom feeling and looking like a spa.
