A cluttered bedroom and closet can make your daily routine feel overwhelming and stressful. When your personal space is disorganized, it’s harder to relax, find what you need, and keep your home clean. Accent On Clean recommends a straightforward approach to decluttering that anyone can follow. These tips will help you create a calm, tidy environment where everything has its place.

Start with a Clear Plan

Before you begin, set aside dedicated time for decluttering. Trying to do it in bits and pieces often leads to frustration and unfinished tasks, as clothes and accessories take up space and make it hard to maneuver around. Choose a weekend or a day off when you can focus without interruptions. A good time is seasonally, as the clothes and accessories take up valuable space in your closet and drawers. One of the benefits of decluttering or downsizing your wardrobe is that you can make money by selling your clothes, purses, shoes and accessories that you don't want or need anymore!

Note: Watch for my blog on ways to make extra money, with items that you already have and talents and skills you have.

Write down your goals. For example:

  • Clear out clothes you no longer wear some of which can be put away seasonally

  • Organize shoes and accessories

  • Create a system for daily use items

Having a plan keeps you motivated and helps you track progress. I am a big fan of plans, notes to myself (and others:), lists and rewards. Chalkboards, whiteboards or good old paper and pencil work for me. I have friends that like everything on their cell or computer, that's great but I like to physically see it right in front of me.

Sort Items into Categories

Sorting is the foundation of effective decluttering. Pull everything out of your closet and bedroom storage areas. Group items into categories such as:

  • Clothes (shirts, pants, dresses)

  • Shoes

  • Accessories (belts, scarves, jewelry)

  • Bedding and linens

  • Miscellaneous items

Seeing everything at once makes it easier to decide what to keep and what to let go.

Use the Four-Box Method

This method simplifies decision-making. Label four boxes or bins:

  • Keep

  • Donate or Sell

  • Trash or Recycle

  • Unsure

As you sort through your items, place each into one of these boxes. Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t worn something in over a year or it no longer fits, it’s time to part with it. As an incentive, think about what new items you can buy with the money you make from selling stuff! You might be able to fetch $50 to $100 for that designer purse that is now out of style but still lovely and usable to someone else.

Maximize Closet Space with Smart Storage

Once you’ve pared down your belongings, focus on organizing what remains. Use these tips to make the most of your closet space:

  • Use uniform hangers to save space and create a neat look.

  • Add shelf dividers to keep stacks of clothes tidy.

  • Store out-of-season clothes in labeled bins on higher shelves.

  • Use pretty baskets, labelled covered boxes, and fabric containers for storage and to keep organized.

  • Use hooks or hanging organizers for accessories.

  • Consider a double hanging rod to double your hanging space. (My fav)

These small changes can make your closet feel larger and easier to navigate.

Organize Your Bedroom for Daily Ease

Decluttering your bedroom goes beyond the closet. Clear surfaces like nightstands and dressers to reduce visual clutter and dust. Use trays or small containers to corral everyday items such as watches, glasses, or chargers. There are beautiful watch display boxes and covered boxes for your often used glasses, and covered baskets designed for your chargers.

Keep only essential furniture to maintain open space. If you have extra storage needs, consider under-bed storage boxes, like ones with rollers from Ikea(as a cleaner, I don't really like anything under beds but these are okay if covered and I can move them easily to clean:) or a storage bench at the foot of the bed, I use mine for extra changes of bed linens and blankets.

Maintain Your Decluttered Space

The key to lasting order is regular upkeep. Set a weekly 10-minute tidying routine to put things back in their place. Every few months, or seasonally, revisit your closet to remove items you no longer use.

Try these habits:

  • Hang clothes immediately after wearing if they can be reused.

  • Purchase a lovely esthetic laundry hamper that gives everyone incentive to use daily.

  • Fold and put away laundry the same day. (Definitely get family involved in this!).

  • Avoid buying new items unless you plan to donate or discard something else.

Benefits of a Decluttered Bedroom and Closet

A simplified space offers more than just visual appeal. You’ll find:

  • Less stress and anxiety

  • More time saved searching for items

  • Easier cleaning and maintenance

  • Better sleep quality in a calm environment

Note: Making your bed in the morning before other activities paves the way for a relaxing day, especially when you go to bed and put away the deco pillows, pull back the covers and fall into comfort. Honestly. It's like a hug.

By following Accent On Clean’s easy decluttering tips, you can transform your bedroom and closet into a peaceful retreat.
